There is a saying that the Nian beast would appear every new year. The Nian Beast is afraid of three things, that are red, firecrackers and loud noises. So later people would get together on New Year’s Eve when the Nian Beast was coming to stick the red couplets, to hang red lanterns, and to set off firecrackers. All of these have the purpose to drive away the Nian Beast.
The player plays as the beast Nian trying to dodge the firecrackers and eat all the food preventing from starving. And eventually facing the grand daoshi.
